Dredging project breaches environmental standards The first breach of the environmental standards set for the Port Phillip Bay dredging project has been reported to the Victorian Office of the Environmental Monitor. The Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) has alerted the Environmental Monitor that clean up operations at the entrance of Port Phillip Bay may not have met the environmental standards established for the project under its Environmental Management Plan. The breach, which occurred on 20 July, was reported to the Environmental Monitor by the PoMC on July 30. According to the Office of the Environmental Monitor, the PoMC knew about the breach on 28 July. The Office of the Environmental Monitor is presently investigating the circumstances of the incomplete dredging clean up, and has received the results of the PoMC’s own review of the incident as part of its investigations. The Office of the Environmental Monitor will provide advice to the PoMC and the Channel Deepening Project’s regulators at the conclusion of its investigations. Copyright Hallmark Editions 2010.
